| reign | the period of rule for a king, queen, emperor, or empress |
| secular | worldly, not connected to a religion |
| invader | an enemy who enters a country by force |
| scorched earth policy | in 1812, practice in which Russian troops, as they retreated from Napoleon's army, burned crops and resources that could supply the enemy |
| serf | from the 1500's to the 1800's, a poor Russian or European peasant farmer who rented land from a landlord and had few rights |
| strike | a work stoppage by employees who refuse to work |
| communism | a system of government in which a single political party controls the government and the economy |
| socialism | a system of government in which the government controls economic resources |
| collective farm | in the Soviet Union, a large farm where workers grew food to be distributed to the entire population |
| propaganda | information made to influence people's opinions or advance an organization or party's idea |
