| Compact State | A state in which the distance from the center to any boundary does not vary significantly |
| Elongated State | A state with a long, narrow shape |
| Fragmented State | A state that includes several discontinuous territories |
| Landlocked State | A state without access to the sea |
| Perforated State | A state that completely surrounds another one |
| Prorupted State | An adhesive compact state with a large expansion |
| Enclave | An enclosed territory with a foreign territory around it |
| Exclave | A part of a country that is separated from the rest of the country and surrounded by a foreign territory |
| Gerrymandering | The redrawing of district boundaries entirely for political purposes, thereby benefiting the party in power |
| Subsequent Boundary | A border created with regard to ethnic differences |
| Geometric Political Boundary | A border drawn with straight lines and arcs, as opposed to irregular lines and shapes |
| Antecedent Boundary | A border that was drawn across an area prior to the area becoming substantially-populated |
| Physical Political Boundary | A border that corresponds to a natural, real-life physical feature |
| Superimposed Boundary | A border made through colonization without regard to prior ethnic/cultural patterns |
| Sovereignty | supreme and independent power or authority in government as possessed or claimed by a state or community |
