Terms needed to know to understand maps

| what is a map | a representation of something (Earth, stars, solar system, a building, etc… |
| latitude is | imaginary lines measured in degrees from the Equator |
| longitude is | imaginary lines measured in degrees East or West of the prime meridian. |
| equator | imaginary line that divides Earth in half into the Northern Hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere. |
| degree | A unit used to measure latitude and longitude |
| Legend | a short description of symbols and figures on a map |
| GPS | used to navigate or get from one place to another. Used in planes, vessels and now often cars. (global positioning system) |
| Pole | One of two points on Earth where the Earth's axis crosses the Earth's surface. The North Pole and South Pole. |
| time zone | A region that has the same time everywhere within it |
| cardinal directions | North, South, East or West. Often seen on a Compass Rose on a map. |
