Determining Location
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Latitude | distance north or south from the equator measured in degrees (parallels) |
| Longitude | distance east or west from the prime meridian measured in degrees (meridians) |
| Hemisphere | half of a sphere or globe (i.e. Northern, Southern, Eastern, Western) |
| Equator | the parallel of 0 degrees latitude from which other latitudes are calculated |
| Prime Meridian | the meridian of 0 degrees longitude from which other longitudes are calculated |
| Absolute Location | the exact position of a place on the Earth's surface |
| Northern Hemisphere | the half of the Earth that lies above the Equator when looking at a map |
| Southern Hemisphere | the half of the Earth that lies below the Equator when looking at a map |
| Eastern Hemisphere | the half of the Earth that lies right of the Prime Meridian when looking a map |
| Western Hemisphere | the half of the Earth that lies left of the Prime Meridian when looking at a map |
| Map Key | A map legend, it lists and explains the symbols, colors, and lines used on the map |
| Scale Bar | Map tool, shows the relationship between map measurements and actual distance on Earth |
| Compass Rose | A map tool that indicates direction |
| Cardinal Direction | Found on a map, the 4 principal courses or routes of north, south, east, and west |
| Intermediate Direction | The courses or routes of northeast, northwest, southeast, and southwest |
| Scale | The size of a picture, plan, or model of a thing compared to the size of the thing itself |
| Relative Location | Location in relation to other places |
