The Rock Cycle

Flashcards for the vocabulary, 3 types of rocks, and the national parks.

Sandstone An example of a sedimentary rock.
Gneiss An example of a metamorphic rock.
Marble Another example of a metamorphic rock.
Limestone Another example of a sedimentary rock.
Basalt An example of an igneous rock.
Granite Another example of an igneous rock.
Sedimentary Rock Rock made out of various sediments formed together through pressure, cementation, and erosion.
Metamorphic Rock Rock formed through extreme heat, pressure, and chemical action.
Igneous Rock Rock formed through the cooling and solidification of magma.
Canyonlands A national park located in the Colorado Plateau in southeastern Utah known for it's many canyons.
Grand Canyon National Park A national Park in the Colorado Plataea in Arizona know for the very large Grand Canyon.
Monument Valley A national park located in the Colorado Plateau on the Arizona-Utah border known for it's unique rock formations.
Formation of the Rock Layers in the Grand Canyon Formed from subduction, movement of the tectonic plates, and erosion.
Differential Erosion Rocks shaped like steps and cliffs and slopes are formed through the process of the weaker rocks eroding first from a mixture of stronger rocks and weaker rocks. It leaves behind the stronger rocks in the shape of knobs and cliffs.
Plateau A large, nearly level area of land that has been uplifted or elevated above the surrounding area.
Rock Formation A rock layer composed of more than one kind of rock, but the rocks can be recognized from one place to another.
Rock Columm A sequence of rocks that can be seen at six national parks.
Arches A national park located in the Colorado Plateau in eastern Utah known for it's many rock arches.
