| Bantu Migration | The movement of the Bantu peoples southward throughout Africa, spreading their language and culture from around 500 B.C. to around A.D. 1000 |
| Nelson Mandela | ANC leader imprisoned by Afrikaner regime; released in 1990 and elected as president for South Africa in 1994 |
| Malaria | This disease is commonly associated with poverty and is spread by mosquitoes. Each year 1-3 million mostly in Sub- Saharan Africa die of this disease and hundreds of millions are effected |
| Rift Valley | A deep valley that forms where two plates move apart |
| Oasis | A fertile place where there is water and vegetation |
