| natural hazard | when physical forces create an extreme event that is somewhat unpredictable and that may have a negative effect on people |
| the four elements | fire, earth, air, and water |
| natural disaster | when a natural hazard causes severe damage, injury, or loss of life or property |
| building codes | a set of rules that specify the minimum acceptable level of safety for constructed structures |
| mitigate | to make something less harsh, severe, or violent |
| preparedness | a state of full readiness; ready for action |
| vulnerability | the extent to which a country, area, or community or structure risks being damaged by a disaster |
| developing country | a non-modernized and poor country that has not created a strong industrial base |
