Unit 5 geography

QuestionAnswer
What is weathering? the process by which rocks break and decay over time
What is sediment? the smaller particles of rock, gravel sand and mud that weathering breaks rocks into
What is erosion? the movement of surface material from one location to another, wind, water, and ice cause this to take place
What are glaciers? thick masses of ice also erode rock and move sediment
What is a plateau? an elevated flatland that rises sharply above nearby land on at least one side
What is an alluvial fan? sediment eroded from a mountain to the base of the mountain
What is a delta? accumulated sediment at the opening of an ocean
What is the core? what is at the center of the earth, temperature and pressure are very high
What is a mantle? Outside of the core is the mantle, which makes up most of the earth’s mass
What is crust? The outer most of the earth’s layer it is about 25 miles thick
What is magma? Liquid rock that is within the earth’s surface
What is lava? Magma that has reached the earth’s surface
What is plate tectonics? Explain how forces within the earth create land forms
