L.I. Geography

Land forms that are present on Long Island

TermDefinition
Island A body of land surrounded on all sides by water.
Barrier Beaches Narrow strips of land in the water. Example: Fire Island
Bay A body of water that is connected to an ocean and partly enclosed by land.
Shore line The land along an ocean.
North Shore Hilly and rocky with many cliffs, coves and harbors.
South Shore Flat and sandy.
Cliffs High steep rocks that can be found on the North Shore.
Cove A small bay surrounded by hills.
Harbor A protected body of water here ships can anchor.
Sound A long body of water that connects two large bodies of water.Example: East River is connected to the Atlantic ocean.
Glacier Large masses of ice.
Peninsula A piece of land that is surrounded by water on three sides. Example: Montauk Point
Erosion The washing away of soil.
