SS: Map Vocabulary
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| map grid | a pattern of lines that intersect that result from the intersecting lines of longitude and latitude |
| parallel | being an equal distance apart everywhere. These lines never cross |
| map scale | the part of the map that compares distance on the map with distance in the real world |
| prime meridian | the meridian marked "0" longitude. It runs north and south through Greenwich, England |
| map key | the part of the map that explains what the symbols on the map stand for |
| latitude | distance north and south of the equator |
| compass rose | the direction marker on a map |
| longitude | distance east or west of the prime meridian |
| relative location | where a place is in relation to other places |
| absolute location | the exact location on Earth |
