SS: Map Vocabulary

TermDefinition
map grid a pattern of lines that intersect that result from the intersecting lines of longitude and latitude
parallel being an equal distance apart everywhere. These lines never cross
map scale the part of the map that compares distance on the map with distance in the real world
prime meridian the meridian marked "0" longitude. It runs north and south through Greenwich, England
map key the part of the map that explains what the symbols on the map stand for
latitude distance north and south of the equator
compass rose the direction marker on a map
longitude distance east or west of the prime meridian
relative location where a place is in relation to other places
absolute location the exact location on Earth
