| climate | the average weather conditions in a certain area over a long period of time |
| compass | an instrument that uses the earth's magnetic field to indicate direction |
| environment | all the living and nonliving things that affect life in an area |
| geography | the study of Earth's physical and cultural features |
| landforms | the natural features of the land's surface |
| region | an area with one or more features that make it different from surrounding areas |
| resources | the materials found on Earth that people need and value |
| topography | the shape and elevation of land in a region |
| latitude | called parallels, these imaginary lines measure distance north and south of the equator |
| equator | imaginary line that circles the globe halfway between the North and South Poles |
| longitude | called meridians, these imaginary lines pass through the poles |
| prime meridian | an imaginary line that runs through Greenwich, England and represents 0 degrees longitude |
| hemispheres | The earth is divided into four hemispheres: north, south, east, and west. The equator divides the north and south hemisphere and the prime meridian divides the east and west hemisphere. |
| scale | gives distances in miles and kilometers on a map |
| legend | also called key, explains what the symbols on the map respresent |
