Geography

The study of everything on earth

TermDefinition
Reference Map Shows the location of the geographic areas for which census data are tabulated and disseminated.
Thematic Map A type of map especially designed to show a particular theme connected with a specific geographic area.
GPS The Global Positioning System. A space based satellite navigation system that provides location and time information in a ll weather conditions.
GIS The Geographic information system. This is a computerized data management system used to capture, store, manage, retrieve, analyze, and display spatial information.
Distance Scale The scale of a map is the ratio of a distance on the map to the corresponding distance on the ground.
Directional indicator Is defined as the largest part of the current period price range which lies outside the previous period price range.
Inset Map A small graphic representation as a picture on a map.
Legend An essential part of the map, it explains what the symbols on the map mean and allows you to make sense of the map.
Latitude (parallel) The angular distance of a place north or south of the earth's equator.
Longitude (meridians) The angular distance of a place east or west of the meridian.
Equator An imaginary line drawn around the earth equally distant from both poles.
Prime Meridian The earth's zero of longitude
Northern Hempisphere The northern hemisphere of earth is the half that is north of the equator.
Southern Hempisphere The southern hemisphere of earth is the half which is south of the equator.
Eastern Hempisphere The eastern hemisphere is a geographical term for the half of the earth that is east of prime meridian and west of 180 degrees longitude.
Western Hemisphere The western hemisphere is a geographical term for the half of earth that lies west of the prime meridian and east of the Anti meridian.
Continents Any of the world's main continuous expanses of land. (Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America,South America).
