Location Terms
| Term | Definition |

| reference map | shows the location of the geographic areas for which census data are tabulated and disseminated |
| thematic map | a type of map especially designed to show a particular theme connected with a specific geographic area |
| GPS | a radio navigation system that allows land, sea, and airborne users to determine their exact location, velocity, and time 24 hours a day, in all weather conditions, anywhere in the world |
| GIS | a computerized data management system used to capture, store, manage, retrieve, analyze, and display spatial information |
| distance sclae | a ratio which compares a measurement on a map to the actual distance between locations identified on the map |
| directional indicator | an instrument that indicates direction of movement, travel etc |
| inset map | a small map set within a larger map |
| legend | a table on a map, chart, or the like, listing and explaining the symbols used |
| latitude (parallels) | the angular distance north or south from the equator of a point on the earth's surface, measured on the meridian of the poin |
| longitude (meridians) | angular distance east or west on the earth's surface, measured by the angle contained between the meridian of a particular place and some prime meridian |
| equator | the great circle on a sphere or heavenly body whose plane is perpendicular to the axis |
| prime meridian | the meridian running through Greenwich, England, from which longitude east and west is reckoned |
| northern hemisphere | the half of the earth between the North Pole and the equator |
| southern hemisphere | the half of the earth between the South Pole and the equator |
| eastern hemisphere | the eastern part of the terrestrial globe, including Asia, Africa, Australia, and Europe |
| western hemisphere | he western part of the terrestrial globe, including North and South America, their islands, and the surrounding waters |
| continents | one of the main landmasses of the globe, usually reckoned as seven in number (Europe, Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Australia, and Antarctica) |
| map grid | a framework of crisscrossed or parallel bars; a grating or mesh |
