Geography and Map Skills Vocabulary
| Term | Definition |

| Absolute Location | The specific location of a place using degrees of longitude and latitude. |
| Cardinal Directions | The four main directions on a compass; north, south, east, west. |
| Compass Rose | Indicates the direction on a map. |
| Enviroment | The surroundings of a place; including: land, water, weather patterns, plants, animals. |
| Geography | The study of Earth's surfaces and the process that shape it. |
| Hemisphere | Half of the Earth; Northern, Southern, Eastern, Western. |
| Intermediate Directions | The directions made by combining two of the cardinal directions; northeast, southeast, northwest, southwest. |
| Latitude | How far south or north a location is from the Equator is shown by a line of latitude. These are horizontal lines also known as parallels. Separates the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. |
| Longitude | How far east or west from the Prime Meridian is shown by a line of longitude. These are vertical lines know as meridians. Separates the Eastern and Western Hemispheres. |
| Map Key | Shows the symbols and colors used on a map and what each one means. |
| Map Projections | Any method of taking the Earths curved surface & having to shrink or stretch areas to have fit best on a flat surface map Same Shape Maps Equal Area Maps and Robinson Maps Relative Location the location of a place in relation to another location or place. |
| Relative Location | The location of a place in relation to another location or place. |
| Scale Bar | Is used to calculate the distance between two points on a map. |
| Six Essential Elements of Geography | A method of categorizing and studying geography. Geographers have divided the study of geography into six essential elements: the world in spatial terms, places and regions, physical systems, human systems, and environment and society. |
