| Sahel | the arid area on the S flank of the Sahara desert that stretches across six countries from Senegal to Chad. |
| Colonialism | the policy or practice of acquiring full or partial political control over another country, occupying it with settlers, and exploiting it economically. |
| Plateaus | an area of relatively level high ground. |
| Escarpments | a long, steep slope, especially one at the edge of a plateau or separating areas of land at different heights. |
| Chaparral | vegetation consisting chiefly of tangled shrubs and thorny bushes. |
| Savanna | a grassy plain in tropical and subtropical regions, with few trees. |
