Definition of words of location

TermDefinition
Reference Map shows the location of the geographic areas for which census data are tabulated and disseminated
Thematic Map a type of map or chart especially designed to show a particular theme connected with a specific geographic area
GPS Global Positioning System: a global system of U.S. navigational satellites developed to provide precise positional and velocity data and global time synchronization for air, sea, and land travel.
GIS Geographic Info System
Distance Scale particular length or distance determined with the precision of one order (or a few orders) of magnitude.
Directional Indicator A compass that assists airplanes
Inset Map More detailed (larger scale) representation of a specific area on a map
Legend an extremely famous or notorious person
Latitude the angular distance of a place north or south of the earth's equator
Longitude running lengthwise rather than across.
Equator The line across the world
Prime Maridian 0 longitude
Northern Hemisphere the hemisphere that is to the north of the equator
Southern Hemisphere the hemisphere that is to the south of the equator
Eastern Hemisphere the hemisphere that is to the east of the equator
Western Hemisphere the hemisphere that is to the west of the equator
Continents Large pieces of land
Map Grids A symbolized network of lines, or graticule, representing parallels and meridians or plane coordinates.
