| 7.perception | a viewpoin that is influenced by ones own culture and expirences |
| 8.formal regions | consist of a central place and the surrounding places affected by it. |
| 9.perceptual regions | defined by peoples feelings and attitudes about areas. |
| 10.functional region | consits of a central place and the surrounding places affected by it. |
| 11.core | center of the earth |
| 12.mantle | a thick later of rock. |
| 13.crust | rocky surface layer of the earth |
| 14.lithosphere | made up of soil, rocks, and other surfacce features |
| 15.atomosphere | the layer off air, water, and other substances above in the surface |
| 16.hydroshpere | consists of water in oceans, lakes, and rivers, and even under ground. |
| 17.biosphere | the world of plants, animals, and other living things that occupy the land and waters of the planet. |
| 18.continents | any of the seven large landmasses of the eaths surface; Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Austrailia, Europe, North America, and South America. |
| 19.relief | the differences in elevation, or height, of the landforms in any particular area. |
| 20.plate tectonics | the earths outer shell is not the earths crust and mantle. |
| 21.coninental drifft theory | The theory that the earths outer shell is composed of a number of large, unanchored plates, or slabs of rock, whose constant movement expalings earthquakes and volcanic activity. |
| 22.Ring of fire | a cirlce of volcanoes surrounding the pacific ocean. |
| 23.Weathering | the breakdown of rock at or near the earth's surface into smaller and smaller pieces. |
| 24.Mechanical Weathering | occurs when rock is actuall broken or weakend phyiscally. |
| 25.Chemical Weathering | alters a rocks chemical makeup by changing the minerals that form the rock or combining them witth new chemical elements. |
| 26.Acid Rain | Chemicals in the polluted air combine with water vapor and fall back to earth as acid rain. |
| 27.Erosion | the movement of weathered materials such as gravel, soil, and sand. |
| 28.Sediment | small particles of soil, sand, and gravel. |
| 29. loess | windblown deposits of mineral rich dust and silt. |
| 30.Glaciers | huge, slow-moving sheets of ice. |
| 31.Moraines | when glaciers melted and receded in some places, they left behind ridgelike piles of rocks and debris. |
