geography terms every 7th grader should know

| gulf | a large part of the ocean that extends into land |
| isthmus | a narrow piece of land connecting two larger areas of land |
| delta | an area where a river deposits soil into the ocean |
| peninsula | an area of land that sticks out into a lake or ocean |
| bay | part of a large body of water that is smaller than a gulf |
| island | an area of land surrounded entirely by water |
| strait | a narrow body of water connecting two larger bodies of water |
| river | a natural flow of water that runs through the land |
| lake | an inland body of water |
| coast | an area of land near the ocean |
| volcano | an opening in Earth's crust where lava, ash, and gases erupt |
| plain | a nearly flat area |
| dune | a hill of sand shaped by the wind |
| desert | an extremely dry area with little water and few plants |
| plateau | a large flat elevated area of land |
| oasis | an area in the desert with a water source |
| glacier | a large area of slow-moving ice |
| valley | an area of low land between hills or mountains |
| canyon | a deep, narrow valley with steep walls |
