Isthmus A narrow strip of land with water on either side connecting two larger land areas
Sinkholes The steep sided of depression when the roof of a cave collapses
Conquistadores Spanish conquerors of foreign lands during the colonial era
Haciendas Larger Spanish colonial estates usually owned by wealthy families but worked by many peasants
Plaza Open space in towns in Mexico and other Spanish speaking countries often in front of a church
Mestizos People of mixed of European and American Indians ancestry
Dictator A leader who rules with almost absolute with full authority
Cash crops Crops grown for sale in a market
Maquiladores Special factories in Mexico owned mainly by American companies
Mangrove Type of tropical tree with roots that grow in salt water; found in tropical coastal areas around the world
Bauxite Ore which aluminum is made
Indigenous Native to an area
Mulattoes People with both African and European ancestry
Cacao Type of tree from which we get cocoa beans
Ecotourism Type of tourism focusing on guided travel through natural areas
Santeria Originating in Cuba, a region that blends African traditions and Christians beliefs
Caricom Is the abbreviation for Caribbean Community and Common Market
Tepuis A chain of high plateaus in Guiana Highlands
Tree line The line of elevation above which trees do not grow
Tar sands Rock or sand layers contain oil
Latifundia larger estates in South America
Buffer states A small country between two larger more powerful countries
Coup A change of government caused by a group taking control by force
Manioc Tropical plants with starchy roots
Minfundia Small south America farms created when large colonial estates were broken up
Favelas Large slums around Brazilian cities
Landlocked Having no coast on the ocean
Terrorism The use of fear and violence as a political force
