| Ambiguity | The multiple meanings, either intentional or unintentional, of a word, phrase, sentence or passage. |
| Analogy | A similarity or comparison between two different things or the relationship between them |
| Antecedent | The word, phrase, or clause referred to by a pronoun. |
| Antithesis (Lit Term) | The opposition or contrast of ideas, the direct opposite. |
| Antithesis (Syntax) | A contrast used for emphasis. |
| Juxtaposition | Unassociated ideas, words, or phrases are placed next to one another, creating an effect or surprise. |
| Parallelism | Structure similarity between sentences or parts of a sentence. |
| Repetition | Words, sounds, and ideas used more than once for enhancing rhythm and creating emphasis |
| Rhetorical question | A question which expects no answer --- used to draw attention to a point, stronger than a direct answer. |
