Genre Vocabulary

QuestionAnswer
A true story about a person's life written by someone else. Biography
A true story about a person's life that is written by that person. Autobiography
A story you write about a memory from your own life. Memoir
A fictional story using made-up characters that could happen in real life. Realistic Fiction
A fictional story that takes place in a particular time period in the past. Often the setting is real, but the characters are made up. Historical Fiction
A type of fantasy that uses science and technology, a lot of times based on the future. Science Fiction
A story that expresses the beliefs of a group of people- usually about Gods or things in nature. Myths
Stories that have a moral. Usually have animals as characters that talk and act like people. Fables
Stories about common people that are passed down from generation to generation. Folk Tales
Stories that are handed down from earlier times, usually based on facts, but are not entirely true. Legends
Verse written to create a response of thought and feeling. Poetry
A suspenseful story about a puzzling event that is not solved until the end of the story. Mystery
Stories that are passed down from one group to another in history. Ex: Folk tales, legends, fairy tales, fables, tall tales, and myths. Traditional Literature
