| Mood | the atmosphere or feeling conveyed in a piece of literature |
| Nonfiction | writing that tells about real people, places, and events |
| Setting | the time and place in a story; where was it, what did it look like etc. |
| Anecdote | a short account of an interesting, amusing, or biographical event |
| 3rd Person Omniscient Point of View | when the author writes the story as a narrator who knows the thoughts and feelings of all the characters. The author refers o all characters as he, she or it. |
| Metaphor | a comparison of two things that have some quality in common. (e.g. the room was a pig sty. The room was messy and is being compared to the living quarters of a pig.) |
| Simile | the comparison of two things that have some quality in common using the words LIKE or AS. (e.g. he was as tall as a mountain.) |
| 1st Person Point of View | Literature written as if the author is the main character. The author uses "I" to describe events. |
| 2nd Person Point of View | When the author treats the reader as the main character. Other characters refer to the reader as "you." (e.g. self-help books) |
| 3rd Person Limited | When the author writes the story as a narrator who only knows the thoughts and feelings of the main character. The author refers to all characters as he, she, or it. |
| personification | giving human qualities to an animal, object, or idea. (e.x. the tree whispered in the wind. |
| Rhyme | repetition of sounds in the end of words. |
| Rhythm | pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables that created a beat. |
| Symbol | a person, place, object or action that stands for something beyond itself. (e.x the bald eagle is a symbol for the United States,or the color white symbolizes purity and innocence. |
| Theme | a message about life or human nature that is conveyed by a piece of literature, what the reader to learn while reading. |
| Tone | the writer's attitude toward what they are writing about. |
| Fact | a piece of information that can be proven or verified. |
| Idiom | an expression different from the literal meaning of the words. (e.x. hit the lights means turn the light off, not punch the lights.) |
| Subjective | influenced by feelings and personal experience, not on fact. (e.x. bitten by a dog, all dogs are evil.) |
| Opinion | a personal point of view. |
