What are infectious diseases? they are passed from 1 person to the next by bacteria EXAPMLE:flu, strep throat
What are the health problems of today? unhealthy lifestyles EXAMPLE:diabetes, heart disease
What are lifestyle diseases? unhealthy behaviors and other factors
What are health risk factors? anything that increases the risk of injury, disease, and other health problems
What are controllable risk factors? health factors that you can do something about
What are uncontrollable risk factors? health risk factors that you can not controll EXAMPLE: age, race, gender, heredity
How can we protect our health? -focusing on controllable risk factors -knowing the leading causes of death for your age group and ALL ages
What are the leading casues of death from ages 15 to 24? -motor vehicle accidents -homocide -suicide
What are the leading causes of death for ALL ages? -heart disease -cancer -strokes & cerebrovascular disease
What are the 6 health risk factors? 1. sedentary lifestyle 2. alcohol & ddrugs 3. suxual activity 4. behavior that casues injury 5. tobacco 6. poor eating
What are the 6 components of health? physical, emotional, social, mental, spiritual, and environmental
What does HEALTH mean? state of being in which all the components of health are in balance
What is physical health? Body function- eating right, exercise, good body weight, drugs or alcohol, no diease or sickness
What is emotional health? copeing with feeling- in positive and nondistructive ways
What is social health? Your relationships with friends, family and others- respect others and stay away from people who dont respect you
What is mental health? to recognize reality and cope with the damands of daily life- having high self esteem, free mental health, trying new things
What is spiritual health? having spiritual direction and understanding your purpose in life- living according to my ethice morals and values, practice a religion, and peace with yourself and those around you
what is environmental health? Keeping air and water clean, food safe, and land around us enjoyable and safe
What are values? strong beliefs and/or ideas
What is wellness? a persons best in all 6 components of health -can't achieve all at one time -a person who is neither unhealthy or healthy
What is optimal health? cope with emotions, healthy relationships, and smart decisions
What is illness? poor eating, health risk beahvior, no exercise, unhappy -can change -you have control
What is heredity? traits that come from your parents -heart conditions -high blood pressure
What are 4 influences on your wellness? heredity, social, cultural, environmental
What is social wellness? relationships with others. Friends-peer pressure makes you better Family-how handling crisis(yelling or talking it out)
What is cultural wellness? strongly influences your health Culture-values, beliefs, and practices shared by people with a common backround
What is environmental health? surroundings, things you come into contact with -pollutants -safety regualtions -traffic laws -medical care
How can you take charge of your wellness? -knowledge -lifestyle -attitude
