Safety Terminology

Acute harm will appear shortly after exposure
Chronic harm may take a prolonged period to become appartent
Carcinogen may cause cancer
Corrosive damages human tissue (skin, eyes)
Irritant causes an inflammatory reaction in human tissue
LD 50 median lethal dose typically expressed as milligrams of chem. per kil of body
Mutagen causes changes in DNA
Sensitizer causes an allergic reaction
Tetragen causes malformations in embryos or fetuses
Toxin causes death death at any LD 50 value
Highly Toxic causes death at lower LD50 values
Hepatotoxin damages the liver
Nephrotoxin damages the kidneys
Neurotoxin damages the nervous system
Health Hazards material for which there is evidence that they may harm to human health
Physical Hazard materials that can cuase damage to the phyical environment
Combustible may support fires
Explosive may causes explosions when exposed to heat, electricity, etc.
Flammable may support fires at lower concentrations that a combustible material
Oxidizer causes a reaction that results in oxidation
Pyrophoric may spontaneously burst into flames when exposed to air
Water-Reactive may spontaneously burst into flames or release toxic material when exposed to water or high humidity
