| flashback | a break in the timeline to emphasize actions or events that occurred previously |
| simile | a comparison of two unlike objects using like or as |
| metaphor | a comparison of two unlike objects without using like or as |
| personification | a figure of speech in which human characteristics are given to nonhuman things |
| hyperbole | an overstatement or exaggeration used for both serious and comic effects |
| point of view | the angle from which a story is told |
| exposition | an introduction of the main characters, settings, and conflicts of the plot |
| climax | the high point or turning point of the story |
| resolution | the final outcome that ties up any loose ends |
| allusion | an implied or indirect reference especially in literature |
| alliteration | Repetition of consonant sounds in two or more neighbouring words or syllables. |
| idiom | an expression whose meaning is not predictable from the usual meanings of its constituent elements, as kick the bucket or hang one's head, |
| enjambment | the running-over of a sentence or phrase from one poetic line to the next, without terminal punctuation; the opposite of end-stopped |
| euphemism | a mild or indirect word or expression substituted for one considered to be too harsh or blunt when referring to something unpleasant or embarrassing |
| connotation | the idea and feeling associated with a word - not its dictionary definition |
| stanza | a group of lines within a poem, usually set off from others by a blank line or indentation |

| tone | the writer's attitude toward the audience and subject |
