allusion an implied or indirect reference especially in literature
alliteration Repetition of consonant sounds in two or more neighbouring words or syllables.
idiom an expression whose meaning is not predictable from the usual meanings of its constituent elements, as kick the bucket or hang one's head,
enjambment the running-over of a sentence or phrase from one poetic line to the next, without terminal punctuation; the opposite of end-stopped
euphemism a mild or indirect word or expression substituted for one considered to be too harsh or blunt when referring to something unpleasant or embarrassing
connotation the idea and feeling associated with a word - not its dictionary definition
stanza a group of lines within a poem, usually set off from others by a blank line or indentation
symbol an object, person, or event that stands for something else
tone the writer's attitude toward the audience and subject
