Literary Elements Vocabulary
| Question | Answer |

| CHARACTER | The people or animals participating in the story |
| PROTAGONIST | The main character the story is about, usually the good guy |
| ANTAGONIST | The character creating problems for the protagonist, usually the bad guy |
| DYNAMIC CHARACTER | A character who undergoes an important change such as a change in beliefs, personality, or attitude |
| STATIC CHARACTER | A character who stays the same throughout the story |
| SETTING | Time, place and mood of the story. |
| MOOD | The overall feeling the reader experiences from a literary work. The mood can change throughout a piece. Think: In what mood is the character? |
| CONFLICT | The problem that must be resolved |
| INTERNAL CONFLICT | Character vs. Self |
| EXTERNAL CONFLICT | Character vs. Others; Character vs. Society; Character vs. Nature |
| THEME | The message about life that the author is trying to reveal through telling the story. This is a statement, not just one word. |
| PLOT | What happens; The events that make up the story |
| EXPOSITION | Provides background information and introduces the setting and the important characters |
| INCITING INCIDENT | The event that sets the story in motion |
| RISING ACTION | Introduces the central conflict in a plot, the events that build up to the high point of the story |
| CLIMAX | The most exciting or intense part of the story for the protagonist; usually a turning point; the OMG! |
| FALLING ACTION | Events that follow the climax and lead to the resolution. |
| RESOLUTION | End of the story where loose ends are tied up, remaining questions are answered, and conflicts are resolved. |
| POINT OF VIEW | The person telling the story |
| FIRST PERSON | Told by a character in the story, āIā |
| ROUND CHARACTER | A character you know a lot about |
| FLAT CHARACTER | A character you do not know well |
