Literary Elements

Literary Elements Vocabulary

QuestionAnswer
CHARACTER The people or animals participating in the story
PROTAGONIST The main character the story is about, usually the good guy
ANTAGONIST The character creating problems for the protagonist, usually the bad guy
DYNAMIC CHARACTER A character who undergoes an important change such as a change in beliefs, personality, or attitude
STATIC CHARACTER A character who stays the same throughout the story
SETTING Time, place and mood of the story.
MOOD The overall feeling the reader experiences from a literary work. The mood can change throughout a piece. Think: In what mood is the character?
CONFLICT The problem that must be resolved
INTERNAL CONFLICT Character vs. Self
EXTERNAL CONFLICT Character vs. Others; Character vs. Society; Character vs. Nature
THEME The message about life that the author is trying to reveal through telling the story. This is a statement, not just one word.
PLOT What happens; The events that make up the story
EXPOSITION Provides background information and introduces the setting and the important characters
INCITING INCIDENT The event that sets the story in motion
RISING ACTION Introduces the central conflict in a plot, the events that build up to the high point of the story
CLIMAX The most exciting or intense part of the story for the protagonist; usually a turning point; the OMG!
FALLING ACTION Events that follow the climax and lead to the resolution.
RESOLUTION End of the story where loose ends are tied up, remaining questions are answered, and conflicts are resolved.
POINT OF VIEW The person telling the story
FIRST PERSON Told by a character in the story, ā€œIā€
ROUND CHARACTER A character you know a lot about
FLAT CHARACTER A character you do not know well
