Unit 12 Ecology

QuestionAnswer
consumer Organisms that must get their energy from other organisms. They do not produce their own energy like a producer.
producer Organisms that produce energy through photosynthesis that support the entire food chain. Grasses, plants, trees, bushes, etc.
predator Any organism that hunts and eats other organisms.
prey The organism that is eaten by a predator.
parasite An organism that lives on or in an organism of another species.
host An organism that a parasite lives in or on.
abiotic All of the non-living things in an ecosystem
biotic All of the living things in an ecosystem
runoff Rain that drains or flows from the land into a stream or river.
pollution Harmful substances or products in the environment.
trait A characteristic passed down from parent to offspring through their DNA.
coral reef Large formations of living organisms that support a large amount of the ecosystem.
photosynthesis Process where producers use energy from sunlight to convert carbon dioxide and water into glucose and oxygen.
symbiosis relationship between two different organisms living in close physical association.
commensalism A relationship between two organisms where one benefits and the other neither benefits or is harmed.
parasitism A relationship between two organisms where one is harmed and the other benefits.
mutualism A relationship between two organisms where both benefit.
