The many uses of "se"
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| The indirect object "se" | "le" and "les" become "se" when two object pronouns are present. e.g. he gives the apple to her = él le da la manzana a ella e.g. he gives it to her = él se la da (a ella) |
| The reflexive "se" | The subject and the indirect object pronoun are the same e.g. me lavo las manos = I wash myself my hands or I wash my hands e.g. se besan = they kiss eachother e.g. me beso = I kiss myself |
| The pseudo-passive "se" | The action, rather than the subject is the main focus of the statement e.g. se rompió la ventana = the window got broken (by who? who knows...) e.g. se perdió el suéter = the sweater got lost e.g. se me perdió el suéter = the sweater got los on me |
| The impersonal "se" | Used for signage and announcements e.g. se habla español aquí = Spanish is spoken here e.g. se vende = for sale e.g. se venden bicicletas = bicycles sold (here) |
| The emphatic "se" | Adds emphasis to verbs that are not normally reflexive w/o changing the meaning (common w/verbs of movement) e.g. me salí del aqual = I flew out of the water e.g. se fue corriendo = he took off running e.g. se comió la manzana = he ate up the apple |
