During the Middle ages, much of European society was organized in a system called...? Feudalism
What is Feudalism? Feudalism was the system of political organization during the Middle ages,in which the lord owned the land and all others served him. * Feudalism was a Hierarchy.
What is a Hierarchy? A hierarchy is a system in which status is ranked and power is concentrated in the higher ranks.
How were people ranked in a Hierarchy? People are ranked one above the other according to their importance. People were born into a level of feudal society and expected to stay in that level for their entire lives.
What was Feudalism based on? Feudalism was based on land,loyalty,and duty.
What did Nobles or Knights have to swear to the King? Nobles or Knights swore oaths of allegiance,that is loyalty,to the king. *They promised to fight for him in exchange for the rights to pieces of land called manors or fiefs.
What is a Manor? A Manor is a piece of land sometimes called a fief
Who had the same amount of power as Bishops? Barons had the same amount of power as Bishops.
Where did Bishops receive their land from? Bishops received their land from the Crown,and over time,the Church became a very large landowner. *As a result the Church was very important to medieval people in their practical lives as their spiritual lives.
Most people in the Middle ages were ___ who lived in rural villages on a manor. Peasants
What did peasants have to turn over to the noble,or "lord of the manor" in exchange for use of the land? Peasants had to turn over a portion of what they produced(crops).They were also expected to build roads,clear forests,and do any other work the lord ordered.
*Peasants were illiterate and uneducated and the manor was usually the limit of their life experience. Remember to take a break when studying! But not too long of a break :)
There were two types of peasant workers on the manor. What were these two types called? Freemen and Serfs
What is a Freemen? Freemen were peasants who rented land or worked for pay.They were skilled workers who paid rent and could leave the manor whenever they wished.(They usually had a skill needed by others on the manor.)
What is a Serf? A Serf is a peasant who worked the land for the lord and were not allowed to leave the manor without the lords permission.
What is a Manorial System? A Manorial System is the way of life organized on a Manor. *Manorial systems were centered around lord's estates or manors.
In the Middle ages was was their economy system solely based on? It was solely based on land ownership and agriculture. *The more land you had the wealthier and more powerful you were!
* Remember that the Feudal System was a Political and Social System. The Manorial System was a Economic System. Read Town Life PG.22
Production of goods and trade in the towns was organized by cooperative organizations called ___. Guilds
What is a Guild? Is an organization that would organize/coordinate the production of goods and trade.
What could a Guild be compared to in this present day? A Union
What did Guilds do? Guild controlled the prices of goods,set standards of quality,and decided who would be admitted to the craft as trainee or apprentice. Guilds also took care of members and their families in case of illness or accident.
What was a Journeymen? A Journeyman is a person who has learned a trade joined a guild.

The Positives that City Life offered a Serf. -If a Serf escaped for a year and one day they were free -Unskilled peasants could learn a trade -You could better your life -Freedom to do what you wish,make money,and marry who you wanted to
The Negatives that City Life offered a Serf. -The guilds controlled the price of goods -Towns were crowded, dirty and rat infested -You had to pay rent;if you couldn't you were homeless -Towns could raise taxes
When did the Middle Ages End? The Middle Ages Ended in 1300
Whose interests were best served by Feudalism? Ask Ms.Migaldi
What were the two events that brought down the Feudal System? 1337-The Peasants'Revolt 1346-1350-The Black Death
Why did the Peasants Revolt? In the Peasants' Revolt 1337? Peasants in both England and France revolted because of the high rents and taxes they had to pay to finance the war.
