What is fascism? Who supported this? political idea of government being more important than individuals/military dictator type; Italy's dictator Benito Mussolini
What were the Nazis? Hitler's socialist party which rose to power
What did Adolf Hitler promise the German people, and how did he act on this promise? promised return to prosperity + international power, by forming Axis Powers, militarism, taking back German territories lost in war, executing Jews.
Which countries formed the Axis Powers and the Allied Powers? Axis Powers = Germany, Japan Italy Allied Powers = France, Britain, later soviet union and US
What is appeasement? Give example during war. Did it work? avoiding war by giving into demands Britain gave into Germany by giving it Sudetenland in exchange for freedom for Czechs (failed)
What was the nonaggression pact Germany made with Soviets? agreed to split up Poland
When did the war officially start? Germany attacks Poland (later Allies declare war)
What territories did Germany take as it gained more power? Poland, Belgium, most of Scandinavia, France
What happened in the Battle of Britain? Who won and how did they win? German air force attacked British planes + bombed cities Britain won, using radar technology
What was the Lend Lease Act? What happened under it? allowed president to send aid to nation important to US helps Allied Powers/countries by giving them food and supplies
Why did the Soviets join the Allies? Germany violated nonaggression pact and invaded Soviet Union
What was Pearl Harbor? large-scale Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, destroyed US naval fleet +airplanes + killed thousands
What did Pearl Harbor lead to regarding the war? The US joined the Allies in the war
