Literary term review for the 9th grade final exam

TermDefinition
Antagonist the "bad guy", the force or character opposing the main character
Characterization techniques the author uses to develop the personality of fictional characters
Rhyme the repetition of sound in two or more words
Dramatic Irony when the words or actions of a character have a different meaning to the audience than they do to the character (the reader knows more about what's going on than the characters do)
Situational Irony a situation in which actions have an effect opposite from what was intended
Verbal Irony a person says or writes one thing, but means another
Flashback the author interrupts the story to look back at an event that happened earlier
Tone the attitude of a writer toward his or her subject, characters, and readers
Foreshadowing a clue/hint about something that will happen in the future
Hyperbole a purposely exaggerated statement
Imagery visually descriptive language
Metaphor the comparison of two things NOT using 'like' or 'as'
Motif a repeated concept or object in a story
Onomatopoeia words that actually make the sound they represent
Oxymoron two words that contradict each other
Personification giving human traits and characteristics to non-human things
Genre a category of literary work
Setting the time and place that a story happens
Simile a comparison of two things using the words 'like' or 'as'
Symbol a person, place, or event that represents something bigger than itself
Theme the overall message the author is trying to get across to the reader
Climax the high point or most important part of a story
Foil a character who contrasts another by being his/her opposite
Protagonist the main character or "good guy"
