Punctuation

QuestionAnswer
semi-colon (;) used to join two complete sentences that are headed in the same direction (ex. I went to the beach; the water was too cold.)
colon (:) used before a list and before dialogue (ex. Please bring the following: paper, pen and notebook. OR Susan said: "Put the fish back in the tank!"
parentheses ( ) like commas and dashes, used to clarify something that you just brought up [ex. Elmer (a 10th grade student of mine) sits in the front row.]
square brackets [ ] used to change or clarify words inside of a quote (...in line 6, when that apeaker says that, "It [the lemonade] was the best ever."
hyphen - (single, small line) to join two words (ex. The 9th grader was a hulking man-child.)
dash -- (longer, two small lines back to back) like parentheses and commas, used to claify something that you just brought up Appositive (ex. Kris -- a student in the front row -- is wearing shorts.) *If you remove them and what is between them, the sentence should still read smoothly.
apostrophe (') #1 1. use in contractions (to take the place of the omitted letters when 2 words are put together (ex. would not=wouldn't, could not=couldn't, let us=let's, it is=it's, we will=we'll, should not=shouldn't, they are=they're, we are=we're)
apostrophe (') #2 2. use to show ownership [ex. The girl's bike was purple. (1 girl, 1 bike) The girls went to the store. (more than one girl went) The girls' bikes were stolen. (more than 1 girl, more than 1 bike), also Kris' shirt is blue.]
