Literary Terms like similies, metaphors, etc.

| allusion | brief reference to a famous person, place, or thing ex. He has the strength of Hercules |
| comic relief | funny moment to relieve the tension of an otherwise tense or sad text |
| foreshadowing | a hint early in the story of something bad that will occur much later ex. Cathy thought she saw something evil in the strangers eyes... |
| hyperbole | intentional exaggeration ex: It seemed like it would rain until my house washed away. |
| imagery | descriptive scene that helps the reader imagine how the place must look. "The coolness of the forest surrounded and I looked up at the towering pine trees, some tilted over dead, carpeted partially with moss... |
| irony | the opposite of what you'd expect to happen. ex: The firemans house burned down |
| metaphor | direct comparison ex. The darkness is a blanket tonight |
| personification | giving a non-human thing human characteristics ex: "It was spooky when the trees whispered in the wind." |
| mood | feeling the reader gets when he reads a certain passage ex. Micheal left the noisy, sunshine filled summer day and crept through the jagged window into the haunted house. The floor creaked beheath him. Dust was everywhere. He felt someone watching him... |
| onomatopoeia | a sound word; when spoken it must make that sound ex. Snap, crackle pop: Rice Krispies |
| oxymoron | two contradicting terms used as one ex. Jumbo shrimp, she is awfully beautiful |
| parallelism | repitition of phrases or sentances that have the same grammatical structure ex. "It was the best of times; it was the worst of times" |
| spatial order | identifying where something is in a scene by relating it to other things in the scene. ex. "Sally sat next to Bob, behind Larry, and to the left of the door." |
| sensory detail | accurate description so as to appeal to one's senses. ex. "The large red balloon floated up into the clear blue sky and hovered over the roof tops" |
| similie | a comparison using like or as. ex. "Its so dark tonight, it's like trying to see throught a blanket." |
| vivid verb | exciting action packed verb. Ex. When sally crashed into the wall, her bike crumpled. |
| antagonist | character in conflict with or opposition to the main character. (may also be force of situation such as war.) |
| conflict | Struggle between opposing characters |
| Paradox | Statement that appears contradictory but reveals a kind of truth. |
| protagonist | Central character in work of fiction or drama |
| diction | words chosen by author |
| slang | informal, nonstandard vocabulary |
| Standard english | English found in text. school's buisiness's, etc. |
