Hydrogen -1 when grouped with just one other atom that is a metal
Hydrogen +1 when grouped with any other atoms than one metal
Oxygen -2 in molecules that contain more than one type of atom
If all else fails, assume that the atom's oxidation number is the same as what it would take on in an ionic compound
The atoms that are most likely to take on the role of an ionic compound are groups 3A, 6A, and 7A
