Positions
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| sitting position | patient is sitting, back of the table lifted to support the patients back. Position used for posture, vital, checking spine and reflexes. |
| Semi-Fowler's position | patient is reclined with bed slightly raised under the knees. Position to check stomach, heart and legs. |
| Supine position | patient is placed on their back. Position to check the extremities, like stomach. |
| Dorsal recumbent position | patient is on their back, hips and knees flexed, soles of feet flat on the table. First of the two position recommended for DRE. |
| lithotomy position | patient is on the back, hips and knees flexed, feet in stirrups. In this position make sure hip are on the very edge of the exam table, used for gynecological purposes such as pap smears. |
| Sims position | patient is on the left side with right knee flexed against abdoment and left knee slightly flexed, left arm is behind body, Second recommend position for DRE. |
| prone position | patient is placed on the abdomen. Position used to check the spine alignment, shoulders, neck and legs. |
| knee chest | patient is on the knees with chest resting on the bed or arms, buttocks raised. Position used mainly for spine alignment. |
| Trendelenburg's position | patient is placed supine on the table, buttock at the edge of the table, legs hanging down. Position used for patients that have orthostatic hypotension, trauma and syncope. |
| Proctologic positions | patient is standing facing the table, bent off the table. Position mostly used in proctologists office used to exam colon, rectum and lower intestine. |
