Unit One Vocabulary

WordDefinition
expanded form A way of writing numbers to show the value of each digit. For example: 438 = 400 x 30 x 8.
place value The value of a digit in a number based on its position.
inverse operation Opposite, reverse operations. For example: the inverse operation of addition is subtraction- the inverse operation of multiplication is division.
distributive property Distributing the number outside the parentheisis to each number on the inside of a parenthesis.
commutative property Means that the ORDER of the two numbers involved DOES NOT affect the value. For example: 4 + 1 = 1 + 4 or 4 x 3 = 3 x 4
associative property Means the GROUPING of two or more numbers does not affect the value. For example: (9 + 1) + 3 = 9 + (1 + 3) or 7 x ( 1 x 8) = (7 x 1) x 8
recriprocal of a fraction FLIP IT For example: the reciprocal of 1/3 is 3/1 or 3.
zero property of multiplication Any number times zero equals zero. For example: 9 x 0 = 0.
Identity property of multiplication Any number times one equals the original number. For example: 8 x 1 = 8.
Identity property of addition Any number plus zero equals the original number. For example: 7 + 0 = 7 and 89 + 0 = 89.
