Poetry Terms

QuestionAnswer
Stanza group of lines that break up a poem
Alliteration repeating specific sounds in two or more words
Rhyme repeating specific sounds
Simile comparing using like or as
Metaphor comparing
Personification giving a non-human, human-like qualities
Lyric poetry a short poem; usually written in first person POV
Narrative poetry a poem that tells a story, longer than lyric because of characters and plot.
Dramatic poetry a narrative poem of a person in a specific situation.
Imagery language that appeals to the senses
Symbol when a person, place, thing, or event has a meaning itself, and also represents something else
Allusion a reference in a poem to a person, place, or thingin history or in another work of literature
End weight
Tone
Assonance repeated vowel sounds in a line or lines in poetry
Consonance repeated sounds can be anywhere in the words
Repetition
Onomatopoeia words that imitate the sound they are naming
