cholasma patches of tan or brown pigmentation associated with pregnancy. mask of pregnancy

Episiotomy A surgical procedure in which an incision is made into the worman's perineum to enlarge the vaginal opening for delivery of the baby
Fetoscope A special stethoscope for hearing the fetal heartbeat through the mother's abdomen
Fetus The name give to the developing baby from approximately the eighth week agter conception until birth.
Fimbriae The fingelike end of the fallopian tube.
Fundus Superior aspect of the uterus.
Gamete A mature sperm of ovum.
gastroesophaeal reflux a return, or reflux, of gastric juicesinto the esophagus. burning sensation..
Gestation The term of pregnancy which equals approzimately 28 days. The period of intrauterine development of the fetus from conception through birth. Also known as Geatational period.
Gonads A Gamet producing gland, such as an ovary or testis.
Goodell's Sign The softening of the uterine cervix a probable sign of preganancy.
Gravida A woman who is pregnant.
Hegar's Sign Sogtening of the lower segment of the uterus.
Hypertension High blood pressure
Hypotension Low blood pressure
Labor The time and the processes that occur during birth from the beginning of cervical dilatation to the delivery of the placenta.
Lactation The production and secretion of milk from the female breast as nourishment for the infant.
Laparoscoy Visualization of the abdominal cavity with an instrument callled a laparoscope through an incision into the abdominal wall.
Leukorrhea A white discharge from the vagina.
lightening the settling of the fetal head into the pelvis.
linea nigra a darkened vertical midline appearing on the abdomen of the pregnant woman extending from the fundus to the symphysis pubis.
lithotomy position a position in which the patient lies on her back, buttocks even with the end of the table, with her knees bent back toward her abdomenand the heel of each foot resting in an elevated food rest at the end of the examination table.
lordosis a forward curature of the spine.
multipara a woman who has given birth tow or more times after 20 weeks gestation
multigravida a womaen who has been pregnant more than once
nagele's rule a formula that is used to calculate the date of birth.
neonatology the branch of medicine that specializes in treatment and care of the diseases and disorders of the newborn through the first four weeks of life.
nullipara a woman who has never completed a pregnancy beyond 20 weeks gestation
obstetrician a physician who specializes in the care of women during pregnancy.
obstetrics the field of medicine that deals with pregnancy
ovulation the release of the mature ovum from the ovary.
placenta a highly vascular disc-shaped organ that forms in the pregnant uterine wall for exchange of pases and nutrients between the mother and the fetus.
preeclampsia high blood pressure proteinuria or edema 20 weeks gestation
pregnancy the period of intrauteringe development of the fetus from conception through birth.
primipara proteinuria or edema 20 weeks gestation
quickening the first feeling of movement of the fetu felt by the expectant mother usually occurs at about 16 to 20 weeks gestation.
striae gravidarum stretch marks taht occur during regnancy due to the great amount of stretching that occurs.
trimester one of the three periods of approximately three months into which pregnancy is divided.
waddling gait A manner of walking in which the feet are wide apart and the walk resembles that of a duck.
abortion termination of a pregnancy before the fetus has reached a viable age.
abruption placenta the premature separtation of a normally implanted placenta from the uterine wall.
ectopic pregancy adnormal implantation of a fertilized ovum outside the uterine cavity. Tubal Pregnancy
gestational diabetess A disorder in which women who are not diabetic before pregnancy develop diabetes during the pregnancy.
hyperemesis gravidarum an abnormal condition of pregnancy characterized by severe vomiting that results in maternal dehydration and weight loss.
incompetent cervix a condition in which the cervical os (opening) do;ates befpre tje fetis reacjes term. without labor or uterine contractions.
bloody show a vaginal discharge that is mixture of thick mucus and pick or dark brown blood.
rupture of amniotic sac the rupture of amniotic sac (membranes) may occur prior to the onset of labor.
sudden burst of energy this occurs in some women shortly before the onset of labor.
amniocentesis a surgical puncture of the amniotic sac for the purpose of removing amniotic fluid.
cesarean section a surgical procefure in which the abdomen and uterus are incised and a baby is delivered transabdominally. Cesarean Delivery C Section.
contraction stress test a stress test used to evaluate the ability of the fetus to tolerate the stress of labor and deliver (CST)
pelvic ultrasound uses high frequency sound waves to examine the pelvis.
pelvimentry the process of measuring the felam pelvis.
pregnancy test HCG
mammary glands the female breast.
ovary one of a pair of female gonads responsible for producing meature ova (eggs)
