Free-Soil Party A political party dedicated to stopping the expansion of slavery.
Henry Clay The senator of Kentucky who helped create the Missouri COmpromise of 1820.
Daniel Webster The senator from Massachusetts who supported the compromise for the sake of the Union.
Stephen A. Douglas The senator of Illinois who passed the Compromise of 1850.
Compromise of 1850 A law that said that California was a free state and that no laws would be passed regarding slavery in the territories won from Mexico.
Harriet Beecher Stowe Former slave, writer of Uncle Tom's Cabin.
Uncle Tom's Cabin A novel that portrayed slavery as brutal and immoral.
Fugitive Slave Act A law in 1850 that helped slaveholders capture runaway slaves.
Popular Sovereignity A system the residents vote to decide an issue.
Kansas-Nebraska Act A bill that proposed the Nebraska Territory to be divided in two.
John Brown An extreme abolitionist, that accompanied by seven menmurdered 5 proslavery people.
Republican Party The anti-slavery Whigs and some other anti-slavery politicians.
John C. Frémont National hero and explorer who was the Republican's presidential candidate.
James Buchanan The Democrat's presidential candidate
Dred Scott v. Sanford A case in which a slave sued for his freedom.
Roger B. Taney Chief Justice who ruled against Scott in 1857.
Abraham Lincoln Douglas' competitor for the Republican presidential candidate.
Harpers Ferry A U.S. arsenal in Virginia that was attacked by John Brown and 18 other followers and killed 4 people to inspire slaves to revolt.
