Define "additive". Additives are chemicals that help tobacco stay moist, burn longer, and taste better.
What is nicotine? Nicotine is a highly addictive drug found in the leaves of the tobacco plant.
Define "ETS" and explain why it is dangerous. Environmental tobacco smoke comes from the tip of a lit cigarette or from a smoker's mouth. ETS contains the same chemicals that are found in the smoke inhaled by smokers.
What are three chemicals produced when a cigarette is burning? Carbon monoxide, tar, and benzene are produced when a cigarette is burning.
What are five health problems that occur early in a smoking habit? Early effects of smoking include nausea, impaired senses of smell and taste, shortness of breath, coughing, and an increased number of illnesses.
What are four forms of tobacco other than cigarettes and smokeless tobacco? Other forms of tobacco include pipe tobacco, cigars, clove cigarettes, and bidis.
Define "chronic bronchitis". Chronic bronchitis causes the airways of the lungs to become irritated and swollen.
Define "emphysema". Emphysema is a disease that destroys the air sacs and walls of the lungs.
Describe four health problems other than respiratory problems, cardiovascular problems, and cancer that are caused by tobacco use. Tobacco use can cause eye disease, gum and dental problems, premature wrinkles, and harm to an unborn baby.
What is the relationship between smoking and cancer? Smoke from cigarettes contains chemicals that cause cancer.
What is social strain? Social strain is when tobacco use causes awkward or risky situations and creates tension among family and friends.
What is the law regarding teen tobacco use? It is against the law to sell tobacco products to anyone under the age of 18.
Why does using tobacco lead to social strain? Tobacco use is a hard habit to hide. Worrying about getting caught causes stress.
What is addiction? Addiction is a condition in which a person can no longer control his or her need or desire for a drug.
Define "tolerance". Tolerance is a condition in which a user needs more of a drug to get the same effect.
What is the difference between physical and psychological dependence? Psychological dependence is an emotional or mental reliance on a drug, while physical dependence results in the person experiencing withdrawal symptoms, such as feeling sick, nervous, and irritable, when he or she quits using tobacco.
Explain how tolerance to nicotine leads to dependence. As tolerance develops, a person begins to feel more normal when using nicotine than when not using it. The person begins to depend on nicotine to avoid withdrawal symptoms.
Define "peer pressure". Peer pressure is the feeling that you should do something because your friends want you to.
Define "targeted marketing". Targeted marketing is advertising aimed at a particular group of people.
Describe three different influences that cause teens to try smoking. Friends, family, media, experimentation, depression, etc.
Describe how advertisements influence your attitude about smoking. Ads influence your attitude about smoking by a making smoking look like an acceptable and popular thing to do.
Define "NRT" and explain how NRT's work. NRT stand for nicotine replacement therapy. NRT works by delivering a small amount of nicotine to the body through products such as nicotine gum or patches.
Describe withdrawal symptoms that make it difficult to stop smoking. Withdrawal symptoms that make it difficult to quit smoking include headaches, feeling dizzy, difficulty sleeping, and depression.
Identify three methods that can help a person quit smoking. Three methods that can help a person quit smoking are support groups, counseling programs, and NRT.
Identify three ways that smoking disrupts everyday life. Smoking disrupts everyday life by making it difficult to travel, go to the movies, or play sports.
What are three ways to tell a friend that you don't want to try tobacco? You can simply say "no", you can walk away, or you can tell them that your parents would be disappointed in you if you used tobacco.
What is the difference between positive and negative peer pressure? Positive peer pressure encourages you to do something that is good for you. Negative peer pressure encourages you to do something that is not in your best interest.
What are four reasons to never start using tobacco? Four reasons to never start using tobacco are: (1) it is addictive, (2) it is very harmful to your health, (3) it makes you smell bad, and (4) using it is very expensive.
