Figurative Language Definitions

QuestionAnswer
simile uses the word "like" or "as" to make a comparison
metaphor makes a comparison without using "like" or "as" but uses words like "is" or "are"
idiom a phrase or group of words that has a meaning but isn't literal
hyperbole an intentional exaggeration used to make a point
personification figure of speech that gives human qualities to non-human or non-living things
alliteration repetition of the beginning consonant sounds or words
imagery painting pictures with words
onomatopoeia word that imitates the sound it represents
