Marine Science Ch 10

Ch 10 Review MCs

QuestionAnswer
How fast do wave trains travel in relation to individual waves in that train? Half the speed of the individual waves.
What kind of waves occur at the boundary between two fluid media? orbital waves
What can initiate a seiche? tides, storm surge or seabed displacement
Why does wave refraction occur? The wave approaches a shore at an angle. It's due to the slowing and bending of waves in shallow water.
What are characteristics of a tsunami? -caused by submerged landslides or earthquakes -moves across the ocean surface long after the landslide or the earthquake has stopped moving -gravity is a restoring source -wavelength 125 mi (200 km) -moves at high speeds and shallow waves
What is the restoring force of a wave? The dominant force that returns the water surface to flatness after a wave has formed in it.
What is a rogue wave? freak wave; a single wave crest much higher than usual, caused by constructive interference.
What is the process of wave separation? dispersion; The wave separates into different wavelengths after leaving the fetch.
What types of wave are categorized as deep-water wave? wind and capillary waves
Standing waves are important in the physics of what kind of wave? tsunamis and tides
What is a wave period? the time it takes for a wave to move a distance of one wavelength.
What maintains a forced wave? its continual disturbing force
When does a wave begin to interact with its bottom? when the bottom is half the wavelength
What is a fetch? the uninterrupted distance over which the wind blows without significant change in direction
Why is a storm surge not considered a progressive wave? it is a crest/dome; wavelength and period cannot be assigned to it
What type of ocean wave has a disturbing force of sudden changes in atmospheric pressure? seiche wave
What occurs when waves hit an obstacle straight on? it reflects back
What is the relative ratio of height to wavelength in a tsunami? very small ex: 1:10 1:20
What determines the characteristics of ocean waves? wavelength: determines size of orbits bottom: determines shape of orbits
What kind of flow is important in driving the ocean surface currents? Stokes drift
What are the important factors for the development of wind waves? wind speed and duration
What happens when a tsunami approaches the shore? drastic changes to water level;draws water out and in; period remains constant; velocity drops;wave height increases
What remains unchanged regardless of depth? wave period
What generates internal waves? wind energy, tidal energy, ocean currents
What causes ocean waves to form? wind
What is a sea? simultaneous wind waves of many wavelengths forming a chaotic ocean surface
What occurs as a tsunami's circumference expands? gets weaker
How often do destructive tsunamis strike somewhere in the world? 1 every year
What drives a storms surge ashore? tropical cyclone (hurricane), frontal storm, etc
What do tsunami warning networks use to monitor the sea surface? seismometers satellites underwater pressure readers
