How is Caesar's character shown when he answers Mettellus Cimber? Caesar hates people who are weak- Caesar is stubborn and will not change to help Mettelus Cimber's brother
"E tu Brute?" means- "And you Brutus?" in Latin- my friend- Caesar couldn't believe his close friend betrayed him
What happened after Caesar was killed? The people of Rome rioted and went crazy - like it was the end of the world
Was Marc Antony honest when he spoke to the conspirators? no- he hid his feelings to find out why they killed Caesar and what would happen next. His true feelings were that he hated them and want to go to war against them.
Who was waiting outside of Rome after Caesar's death? Octavius- the young leader Caesar chose to rule Rome after his death
What does Mark Antony tell Octavius to do after Caesar was killed? to wait outside of Rome until after he can give his funeral speech praising Caesar and condemning the conspirators. If the crowd hates the conspirators after that- they will go to war with them.
In his funeral speech- what tactic does Brutus use? he tells Cassius that he will speak before Mark Antony- he appeals to the emotions of the crowd
What reason does Brutus give for the murder of Caesar? Caesar was too ambitious
What word does Antony emphasize in his speech? Why? "honorable"= saying that the treason commited by the conspirators was not "honorable"
In his funeral speech what tactic does Marc Antony use? "reverse psychology" - he lets them draw their own conclusions - he appeals to the reasoning abilities of the crowd
How does the crowd react to both Brutus and Marc Antony's speeches? They agree with both speeches- the are "easily swayed" by whoever is speaking. In the end - since Brutus spoke last- they want revenge for Caesar's death.
How does Antony get the crowd to listen to him/ Antony tells the crowd that Caesar had a will and left the people of Rome everything. He also shows them Caesar's dead body and wounds.
What crazy act do the people of Rome do after Caesar's funeral? They want revenge for Caesar's death so they kill an innocent man named Cinna just because he has the same name as one of the conspirators.
Who are the leaders who make up the new triumvarate of Rome? Mark Antony, Lepidus, and Octavius
At the beginning of Act IV what is the new triumvarate doing? planning to kill those involved in the murder of Caesar
What does Antony think of Lepidus? he doesn't think he is a good leader- compares him to his horse- says he is only an errand boy
Why were Brutus and Cassius arguing with each other? Brutus refused to drop charges against Lucius Pella which Cassius requested
How do Brutus and Cassius end their argument? Cassius offers to let Brutus kill him. They make peace.
What happened to Portia? She killed herself- by eating hot coals (she was left in the city while her husband Brutus was out hiding from Antony and Octavious)
What tactic does Cassius want to take on against Antony and Octavius army? he wants to wait for them to find them and let their army get exhausted looking for them before the battle
What tactic does Brutus want to take on against Antony and Octavius army? he wants to go fight them in Sardis before they can pick up more fighters who want revenge for Caesar's death
Is Cassius or Brutus' military plan chosen and why? Brutus' plan is chosen because ever since Cassius has included Brutus as one of the conspirators Brutus has taken over as the leader- even though he has made many bad decisions.
Varro and Claudio soldiers that Brutus has sleep in his tent to potentially take a message to Cassius and also to protect him
What premonition does Brutus have of his death? He tells Lucius, "If I live- I will be good to thee"
Who visits Brutus in the night? Caesar's ghost- he says - "thou shalt see me at Philippi"
