QuestionAnswer
tone expresses the writers attitude toward his subject.
style is a manner of writing. it involves not what is said, but how something is said.
setting the time and place of the action of a story, poem, or play.
mood a feeling that a literary work conveys to the reader.
plot a sequence of related events that make up to express.
main idea a central idea that writer wishes to express.
conflict a struggle between opposing forces.
foreshadowing occurs when a writer provides hints to suggest future events in a story.
suspense is a feeling of growing tension and excitement.
drama is a form of literature meant to be performed by actors in front of an audience.
theme a message about life or human nature that is communicated by a literary work.
historical fiction contemperary fiction that is set in the past.
summarizing the process of briefly recounting the main ideas of a piece of writing in a person's own words, while omitting unimportant details.
climax the point of maximum interest, or turning point in a story.
flashback a scene from an earlier time that interrupt the ongoing action.
imagery words or phrases that appeal to the readers' five senses.
exposition sets the tone, establishes the setting, introduces the characters and gives the reader important background information. The structure of the plot normally begins with this.
rising action refers to the events in the story that move the plot foward.
resolution/ falling action the part of the plot of a story that occurs after the climax.
point of view the perspective from which a story is told. When the story is told from the first-person point of view, the narrarator is a character in the story. When a writer uses a third-person point of view, the story is told by a narrative voice outside the actio
characterization consists of all the techniques writers us to create characters.
dynamic characters change signifiacntly.
static characters change only a little or not at all.
narrative hook a literary device used at the very beginning of a story to engage the readers curiosity.
