Amphibian means: "Double life"
Amphibians can't maintain their body heat because they are: Ectothermic
Amphibians are grouped according to: Their body structures
What happens when an amphibian gets cold? Everything going on inside slows down
Most amphibians produce a slimy substance called: mucous
3 groups of amphibians -Frogs and toads -Newts, sirens, and salamanders -caecillians
Characteristics of amphibians -ectothermic -live part of life on land and part of life in the water -skin isn't waterproof -go in water to mate and lay eggs -breathe air
Why were amphibians and reptiles grouped together? They are closely related
What advantage does a cold-blooded animal have over a warm-blooded animal? Cold-blooded animals don't have to maintain the same body temperature so they can go days without eating, not like warm-blooded animals who have to eat on a regular basis to maintain their body temperature.
Hibernation When and animal's body functions slow down; the entire body becomes at rest
Estivation When an animal who lives in a hot and dry place finds a cool spot and slows down all body functions until cooler conditions return
Metamorphosis a change in development as the young amphibian grows from an egg to a larva to an adult
What fish are believed to be ancestors amphibians Lobe-finned fish
Fossil indicate that amphibians first appeared on Earth during the Devonian period
2 reasons early amphibians flourished on land new food and no predators
How are modern amphibians different from their ancestors? They are smaller and less varied.
3 adaptations the ancient amphibians had for living on land lungs, fins that were like legs, and bony supports
Why are amphibians dependent on water? Their skin need to be moist and their eggs are shell-less
