| chorus | spoken by a single person who serves as a narrator; foreshadows and summarizes events |
| muse | Goddess of poetry; called upon for inspiration (Homer calls upon the muse for inspiration to tell the story of Odysseus) |
| in medias res | The middle of; starts in the middle of the action |
| irony | Contrast between appearance and reality |
| dramatic irony, the reader knows something the character does not | |
| verbal irony (sarcasm), knowingly exaggerates; a character says one thing but means something else | |
| situational irony, contrast between what a character expects and what actually happens | |
| archetype, (make sure you know characteristics)-Typical example of a certain person or thing; recurring theme, character, symbol or situation | |
| hyperbole, exaggerated statements or claims not meant to be taken literally. | |
