| Chorus | Spoken by a single who serves as a narrator; foreshadows and summarizes events. |
| Muse | Goddess of poetry; called upon for inspiration (Homer calls upon the Muse for inspiration to tell the story of Odysseus) |
| In Medias Res | The middle of; starts in the middle of the action |
| Irony | Contrast between appearance and reality |
| Dramatic Irony | The reader knows something the character does not. |
| Verbal Irony | Knowingly exaggerates; a character says one thing but means something else (sarcastic) |
