Poetry and Figurative Language unit

| rhyme scheme | the use of words that have similar sounds in a poem or a verse, following a pattern of rhyme |
| hyperbole | an obvious exaggeration that is not meant to be taken literally |
| idiom | an expression that means something apart of the literal meaning |
| imagery | descriptive language that appeals to the senses |
| figurative language | expressive language written to create a special effect |
| voice | personal inflection or tone of poem |
| rhythm | a pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables, also called meter. (Think viola, 4-4 time, 2-4 time exc.) |
| onomatopoeia | words that sound like the thing they stand for |
| simile | a figure of speech in which one thing is compared to another using the words like or as |
| metaphor | comparing two things that are very different without using like or as |
| personification | giving human qualities to ideas or inanimate objects |
| verse | long section of poem, follows pattern |
| stanza | two or more lines of a poem, together, form a division of the poem |
| alliteration | grouping together two or more words that repeat the same sound |
| symbolism | the use of an object or idea to represent something something other than itself |
