QuestionAnswer
What is the respiratory system? performs the vital function of gas exchange between the body and environment. This means our body takes in oxygen and puts out carbon dioxide.
What is asthma? A disease that causes an obstruction of the lower airway.
What is emphysema? A lung disorder in which the bronchioles become enlarged and plugged with mucous.
What is COPD? a permanent, destructive disorder tht is a combination of chronic bronchitis and emphysema.
What are the 3 forms of medication are used to impove the function of an impaired respiratory system? 1. mists 2. ointments and creams 3. pills or capsules.
There are 10 classes of drugs that are used to treat a variety of respiratory order. What are they? 1. Beta2-adrenergic agonists 2. anticholinergic 3.corticosteroids 4. leukotriene modifiers 5. mast cell stabilizers 6. methylxanthines 7. mucolytics 8. expectorants 9. antitrussives 10. decongestants.
What are adrenergic agonists? these drugs are used as bronchodilators (widens the bronchi)
The above are used to treat? bronchial spasms and constriction with respiratory disorders. Also used for asthma and COPD. inhaled forms are preferred because they act locally.
Beta2-adrenergic agonists are? the drug of choice for fast relief from asthma and COPD.
Beta2 drugs are? 1.generic-levalbuterol brand-Xopenex 2.generic metaproterenol brand-Alupent 3. generic-piruterol brand-Maxair 4. generic-terbutaline. these are used for use with anti-inflammatory agents. Are not used for relief of acute asthma attacks.
what is anticholinergic? used for treating respiratory disorders. Used for COPD. sometimes combined with beat 2 adrenergic.
How do anticholinergic work? blocking the parasymphathetic nervous system. inhibits the receptors on bronchial smooth muscle and thus dilating the bronchi.
what drug name for anticholinergic? generic-ipratropium brand-Atrovent
What are corticosteroids? anti inflammatory drug available in inhaled and systemic forms for short and long term control of asthma symptons. they work by inhibiting inflammatory agents. most effective for long term tretment and prevention of acute asthma attacks.
What are inhaled corticosteroids? preferred drugs for preventing attacks in patients with mild to severe asthma. Use of inhaled forms reduces the need for systemic in many cases. reduces the risk of developing serious long-term adverse reactions.
Types of inhaled corticosteroids? 1. generic-beclomethasone beand-Qvar&Beconase 2. generic-budesonide brand-Pulmicort&Rhinocort 3. generic-fluticasone brand-Flovent,Flonase,Veramyst 4. traimcinolone brand-Azmacort and Nasacort AQ.
what are systemic corticosteroids? are normally reserved for moderate to severe attacks.
types of systemic corticosteroid drugs? 1. prednisone-Sterapred 2. prednisolone-Prednoral,Prelone,Orapred 3. hydrocortisone-Cortef(avail IV form) 4. methylpredisolone-Medrol(avail in IV form).
What are leukotriene modifiers? used to prevent and control asthma attacks in patients with mild to moderate asthma.
What is leukotriene? compounds manufactured by certain types of white blood cells called leukocytes in response to an allergic trigger.
What do leukotriene receptor agonists? these drugs block leukotriene receptor sites in the respiratory tract. they are not bronchodialators therefore should not be used in place of rescue inhalers.
What do leukotriene formation inhibitors do? reduce the body's formation of leukotrienes.
Types of leukotriene drugs are? 1. zileuton-Zyflo CR
What are mast cell stabilizers? mainly used to prevent asthma attacks in: children, adults and children with mild disease. patients with exercise-induced asthma (drug of choice). Used for the prevention and long term control of asthma symptons.
mast cell stabilizer drugs are? 1. cromolyn sodium-Intal 2. nedocromil-Tilade
What are methylxanthines (xanthines)? used to treat disorders. To relieve or prevent bronchospasms asoc. with chronic bronchitis & emphysema & to treat bronchial asthma. Work by relaxing smooth muscles of the bronchi & reduce fatigue of the diaphram.
Types of methylxanthine drugs are? 1.theophylline-Theo24 2. aminophylline
What is a prductive cough? cough that expels secretions from the lower resp. tract.
What is a expectorants? used for productive coughs to help rid the lungs of these secretions. If the secretions become pooled in the lungs it can lead to pneumonia.
What is the most commonly used expectorant? guaifenesin-Mucinex. In order for the drug to work properly you must drink lots of water.
What are some types of Antitrussive drugs? 1.dextromethorphan-Delsym--suppresses the cough reflex by acting on the cough center in the middle of the brain. most widely used cough suppressant in the US.2.codeine works through the brain & CNS to suppress the cough.4. hydrocodone-works suppress brain
continue...cough reflex benzonatate-Tessalon Perles.
What are decongestants? may be classified as systemic or topical, depending on how they are administered network.
What are systemic decongestants? stimulate nervous system to reduce swelling in the resp. tract. they do so by stimulating the alpha-adrenergic receptors in the body's blood vessels.
Types of decongestant? 1. ephedrine 2. phenylephrine 3. pseudoephedrune-also decongests the Eustachian tubes.
What are topical decongestants? powerful vasoconstrictors applid directly to mucous membranes of the nose.
Types of topical decongestant drugs are? 1.epinephrine-Primatene Mist 2.phenylephrine-Sinex3.naphazoline-Privine4.oxymetazoline-Afrin not to be used for more than 3 days.5.tetrahydrozoline-Visine.
