The Road to War

What is nationalism? feeling of loyalty for nation, inspired people who shared cultures to unite
What was the SPARK? What did it lead to? Assassination of Archduke Francis Ferdinand (AH) by Serb nationalist --> led to Austria-Hungary declaring war on Serbia
Who were the Central Powers? Who later joined Austria-Hungary + Germany later joined by Ottoman Empire + Bulgaria
Who were the Allied Powers? Who later joined? France, Russia, Britain later joined by US + italy
What happened at the First Battle of the Marne? o Germany marches to France, slowed by Belgian resistance o French army eventually pushed Germans back
Define trench warfare. Style of fighting from the protection of deep ditches, dug in zig zag patterns
Where were some forms of new technology? • Artillery guns • Poisonous gases Tanks, Airplanes
Was trench warfare successful? Why or why not. No, because later airplanes and tanks could bomb from overhead or charge through
What were the outcomes of the early battles of the war? The First Battle of the Marne made Germany retreat but they weren’t defeated. Others at Somme River and Verdun in France were stalemates despite huge attacks from both sides.
How did the german navy respond to the British navy blockades? make U-Boats = submarines that launched torpedoes on Allied ships and some neutral ships
How did Belgian resistance affect German war plan? It slowed it but did not stop their advance to France. It also led Britain to declare war on Germany (Britain and Belgium were allies) so Germany had to strategize how to fight Britain.
Give 2 examples of nationalism in Europe Ex. Slavics wanted to break away from Austria-Hungary and join Serbia (AH sees this as threat) Ex. German states united to form Germany
